Nathan Favors
For many years I ran my own landscaping and tree removal business. During this time, I was exposed to many different species of wood and began to love and respect what nature had created. I wanted to find a way to preserve this beauty. When, in 1998, I visited a woodturners convention, I found exactly what I needed to do. I found my calling. From there I embarked on my journey to teach my self to master this craft through observation, trial and error and sheer will.,In my studio is where you will find me on most days, it is where I feel most at home.
I examine each log and determine where to cut with my chainsaw, to be able to cut each piece strategically. To make sure as little as possible is wasted of the most interesting areas in the log. After the raw pieces are cut, I mount it to the lathe and start the turning process. Each piece takes on average a year to dry, under carefully monitored conditions. Some require humidity, some not. Some require warmth, depending on the wood species. Each piece is then sanded to a very high 1200 grit and finished with natural oils only. A lot of time and effort is spent on making sure the finished piece is not only pleasing to the eye, but also feels very soft and smooth. A pleasure to all the senses is the ultimate goal.
Artist Statement
My objective is to always let the wood speak and dictate what it wants to be. To move with the natural curves, twists, and turns of the wood. To expose the exquisite patterns hidden inside. I love to study a raw piece of wood and let my imagination wander to find the perfect form and bring out its promise.
Graceful, elegant, and yet simple lines are what I add to my pieces, Mother Nature does the rest.
